PIANIST - Irma Vallecillo Visiting Artist

Praised for “spirited” (Boston Globe) performances that are “vigorous and passionate” (New York Times), Chinese-born pianist Qing Jiang enjoys a diverse career in solo, chamber, and contemporary music. As a concerto soloist, Qing performed under legendary conductor and composer Oliver Knussen with the Britten-Pears Orchestra in England, as well as with the Lanzhou Symphony under revered Chinese conductor Zushan Bian. Highlights of the 23-24 season include “Dreamed Landscapes” CD tour in Germany, China, and New Zealand, recital tour with Cellist Natalie Clein, and artist residencies at Tianjin Juilliard in China and Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.

Passionate about chamber music, Qing has collaborated with Itzhak Perlman, Joel Krosnick, Gil Kalish, as well as the Juilliard, Shanghai, Jasper, Aeolus, and Parker string quartets. She also maintains longstanding relationships with Yellow Barn, Kneisel Hall, Interlochen Music Center, and the Aldeburgh Festival where she has been frequently featured as guest artist and mentor. Other festival appearances include Music@Menlo, Ravinia’s Steans Institute, the Perlman Music Program, Garth Newel Music Center, and the Aspen festival where she was a winner of the concerto competition. Performing alongside her duo partner, violinist Ying Xue, Qing was featured in Christian Tetzlaff’s Carnegie Hall workshop. In 2016, she performed on a six-city tour in China with esteemed chamber musicians Laurie Smukler, Natasha Brofsky, and Roger Tapping.

Versatile in style and interests, Qing has performed with the Britten-Pears contemporary ensemble, the Juilliard contemporary ensemble, and the Aspen percussion ensemble. She’s worked closely with composers Jennifer Higdon, Jörg Widmann, Brett Dean, Eric Nathan, and Juri Seo to prepare performances of their work, and her 2022 solo album “Dreamed Landscapes” (Albany) features works by Thomas Adès and Daniel Temkin.

Qing began studying piano at age three with her mother. As the first Chinese recipient of Jack Kent Cooke Arts Scholarship, she holds degrees from Arizona State University, the Juilliard School, and New England Conservatory. Her principal teachers include Shuxing Zhen, Caio Pagano, Robert McDonald, Wha-kyung Byun and Patricia Zander. Committed to mentoring the next generation of musicians, Qing has taught at New England Conservatory, the Curtis Institute of Music, and Yellow Barn’s Young Artist Program.
